Curated China : a series of beautiful photo-books
With a blend of technical expertise and artistic flair, I have focused on delivering captivating photos that show depth and emotion. These are not standard travel guides, in fact I'd hesitate to call them guides at all. Instead, 'showcase' may be a term. Each book is a dedicated visual exploration of a single region, location or city, interspersed with anecdotes, and illustrating unique cultural perspectives, including topics such as Jiangnan Watertowns or Ethnic Minorities in China. They are designed to move past a surface-level view of tourist sights and give you a genuine, immersive, look at the people, culture and spirit of these places.
This page is under construction as of 25th July 2026 and will be completed by the 27th July. Please browse the progress to date. Thank you for your understanding !

Curated China : Guizhou
Available now in Hardcover, PDF, eBook
and Wall Prints from the book!

Curated China : Guizhou
An oft ignored but beautiful mountainous province. From the gorgeous karst mountains and rapeseed fields of Wanfenglin to the record high waterfalls in the area around Anshun, to the many villages outside of Kaili and Congjiang, that are home to some of the 48 ethnic minorities living in this province.
After my first month long visit in 2023 I was determined to return and in 2026 I went back for over 3 more weeks.
This book is the result of my travels around the province and especially my interactions with the local ethnic minority people, when staying overnight, in a number of their villages. From smoky pits under Drum Towers, to the many hand built and nail-less wooden 'Wind and Rain' bridges, some truly spectacular. Guizhou is a magnificent province deserving of so much more love that it gets from foreign tourists. If only they knew ! Well this book is a glimpse behind that curtain.
Curated China : 25 Jiangnan Watertowns
Hardcover, PDF, eBook and Wall Prints from the book available from September 2026

Curated China : 25 Jiangnan Watertowns
The incredible ancient watertowns, many that are virtually unchanged in hundreds, if not thousands, of years. That are to be found alongside the canals, used to ply the silk and other trades, in the vast flatlands between Suzhou , Huzhou and Shanghai. I've been photographing them for the past 12 years and my new 150pp book, with over 300 high quality images, will be out in September 2026!
I've been to many of these watertowns numerous times, to shoot the scenes I missed on the the first, second or third visit !
There is nothing like staying overnight to enjoy the quiet and the lights after the day tourists have departed. And then at dawn to rise and wander the now deserted streets for a couple of hours, before returning to my hotel for a late breakfast and to plan my escape before the day trippers return !
This book will not only show you what you are missing or bring back very fond memories for you, but I've included a rating system so that you can choose the watertown most aligned with your preferences - or you can take my recommendations !

Curated China :
Shanghai - 27 Years of Photography
Having lived in China for 30 years I have been taking photos of this incredible city that I call my home, for 27 of them. From The Bund to the suburbs, from Lujiazui and it's growth through to the lovely suburban parks and temples, from the cute narrow streets of the former French concession to the banks of the Yangtze delta.
From the very very special ancient watertowns to the amazing modern lit bridges and overhead motorways.
And not forgetting the lights and tradition of Yu Garden, the numerous lovely temples and the former Expo site (of which I have shot a lot images from the actual Expo itself).
So much to see and photograph !
Included in the book will be a list of 150 places that even the most discerning of tourists will be able to fill a week with more than enough to keep them busy and happy.
Curated China : Furong & Fenghuang
Curated China :
Huangshan Mtn + Anhui Ancient Towns
Hardcover, PDF, eBook and Wall Prints from the book available from October 2026
Hardcover, PDF, eBook and Wall Prints from the book available from March 2027

Curated China : Furong & Fenghuang
Twin ancient, but very different, towns just an hour apart. Furong dominated by the huge waterfall in it's very centre to the wonderful ethnic minority enclave of Fenghuang who's ancient buildings are built along both sides of a wide, slow river. Both are superb by day but even better after dark.

Curated China :
Huangshan Mtn + Anhui Ancient Towns
Huangshan mountain, that of the famous Chinese black ink paintings, has called me back numerous times. Whilst beautiful at any time of year, especially with the famous 'Sea of Clouds' that appears over 250 days a year, it is especially gorgeous (but very cold, often down to -20C or so) in Winter when rime ice forms on trees and branches and then the Sea of Clouds rolls in on the ice-clad mountains. And then there is dawn and sunset !
The ancient Anhui villages are gorgeous and famed for their beauty. My Top 10 however are not going to be those most oft quoted !
Curated China : Wenzhou
Hardcover, PDF, eBook and Wall Prints from the book available from Summer 2027

Curated China : Wenzhou
Wenzhou is my wife's home town (city). We were married there in 1987 and of course have been back more than a hundred times over the intervening years.
Not only is it a city with a lot to see but it is home to the most incredible fireworks display I've ever seen ! Thousands of people gather to let off huge thunderous fireworks every Chinese New Year on the banks of the Ou River.
I'm amazed I'm still here after witnessing it up (very very) close, in the flesh, more than a few times !
Curated China : Labrang Monastery, Gansu
Hardcover, PDF, eBook and Wall Prints from the book available from April/May 2027

Curated China : Labrang Monastery - Gansu
The both beautiful and massive (860,000 sq.m) Labrang Monastery is set at an altitude of 3,200m (ca. 10,000 ft) and is host to not only 1,500 monks (belonging to the Gelug school (the "Yellow Hat" sect) of Tibetan Buddhism) and the world's longest prayer wheel circuit at 3.5 kms long, but also the wondrous Monlam Festival which attracts pilgrims from all over the region, including Tibet, Sichuan and Gansu provinces. It is an incredible spectacle.
I will be traveling back to Labrang for Monlam in January 2027. Many of the images from that festival in the snow ill be included in this upcoming book.
